Most RV buyers spend weeks comparing sticker prices, floor plans, and feature lists — and then lose thousands on decisions they never thought about.
I’ve spent 19 years as a certified vehicle inspector. An RV is two things at once: a vehicle and a home. That means it fails — and holds or loses value — in ways most buyers never see coming. The decisions that actually move the money over a decade are almost never the ones on the dealer’s spec sheet.
Here’s what a 10-year view really looks like, and the buying and ownership decisions that quietly save — or cost — you the most.
Decision #1: Water Is the Silent Killer of RV Value
If you set aside new-vs-used depreciation, one thing destroys more RV value than anything else: water intrusion. Not the engine. Not the transmission. Water.
Here’s why it outweighs everything else over ten years:
- The damage is irreversible at any reasonable cost. A failed fridge or water heater is a part you swap. But undetected water attacks the structure — plywood, insulation, framing, and side panels (delamination). A full roof-membrane replacement (EPDM/TPO) already runs $3,000–$8,000; the moment there’s wall delamination or rotted plywood to rebuild, the bill climbs fast to $8,000–$15,000+ at U.S. shop labor rates of $120–$180/hour — often more than the rig is worth after 7–10 years.

Measured against a clean, comparable rig’s book value (NADA), mold, a soft floor, or delamination knocks off another 50–80% — and a unit with confirmed intrusion is often unsellable to the public, going for scrap or renovator prices.

Put simply: unattended water intrusion can easily trigger $5,000 to $15,000+ in structural and delamination repairs and a steep 50–80% loss in residual value — while proactive sealing and inspection cost only $1,500 to $2,500 over a decade. That single habit protects more of your money than any option you can tick at the dealership.

Stop Buying the Look. Start Pricing the Structure.
Buyers pay for what they can see: the promotion, the design, the options, the five-star unboxing review, the emotional “let’s just do it.” An inspector prices what you can’t see: repairability, parts availability, recurring maintenance, and reliability at year three and five.
I call it the glamour-vs-chassis trap. A buyer falls for ambient LED lighting, quartz-look countertops, and a big touchscreen — and never checks the subfloor insulation, the integrity of the seams, or whether the technical components can even be reached for service. The result is a modern-looking rig with thousands of dollars of structural problems waiting underneath.
The same trap hides in brand choice. A typical RV loses 50–65% of its value over ten years no matter what — but not every brand depreciates at the same rate. A cheap, heavily-optioned rig can feel like the better deal than a plainer, better-built one, then shed far more of its value down the line and wipe out the money you “saved” up front. The fix is one discipline: run the Total Cost of Ownership, not the sticker price.

The smart buyer never asks “What does this cost me today?” They ask “What will this decision cost me per year, over its entire useful life?”
A “Good Deal” Isn’t Cheap If It’s Damaged
Here’s a pattern I’ve watched play out for years in vehicle resale. Two sellers: one buys crash-damaged vehicles, repairs them, and flips them. The other buys clean used units and improves them — paint, options — then resells.
The second one wins, almost every time. A structurally damaged vehicle carries a high repair cost and struggles to pass technical inspection. The “cheap because it’s damaged” unit is a money pit; the clean, well-kept one is the winning trade.
For an RV, this is the same lesson as the water problem: structural damage is a trap. A rig that’s cheap because it has frame, floor, or water damage will cost more to fix than it’s worth, won’t hold value, and won’t pass a serious inspection. Buy clean. Pay a little more for sound structure and a clean maintenance history — it’s the cheaper decision over ten years.

The Age Sweet Spot: Not Newest, Not Oldest
There’s a temptation at both ends of the age range, and both cost you.
Buy the newest rig and you eat the steepest depreciation in the first years. Buy the oldest and you inherit corrosion, worn-out components, and — the killer — parts that are no longer made. I’ve seen plenty of owners of very old vehicles lose money not on the purchase, but on the slow bleed of deterioration and unfindable spare parts.
The winner sits in the middle: a moderately recent, proven model that’s been well maintained. New enough that parts and systems are still supported, old enough that someone else already paid the depreciation cliff. That’s the sweet spot where reliability and value meet.

The One Question That Changes Everything
If you take one thing from an inspector’s view of RV ownership, make it this: the sticker price is the least important number in the deal.
The decisions that save you thousands over ten years are boring and structural — keep the water out, buy sound structure over shiny features, avoid damaged bargains, and land in the age sweet spot. None of them are exciting on a showroom floor. All of them are the difference between an RV that holds its value and one that quietly drains your account.
