Your RV takes different abuse in different seasons. A rig that sat through summer heat in Arizona needs a different inspection before fall travel than one that wintered in a damp northern climate. These seasonal preparation checklists help you catch problems before they strand you on the road.
Spring Pre-Season Checklist
After any period of storage or light use through winter, go through every system before your first spring trip.
- Roof and seals: Inspect all seams, seals, and caulking. Winter temperature swings crack sealant faster than any other season. Reseal anything showing cracks, gaps, or discoloration.
- Tires: Check pressure and inspect sidewalls for flat-spotting or cracking. Tires that sat stationary through winter can develop flat spots that cause vibration until they warm up and round out.
- Battery bank: Check state of charge and terminal condition. Batteries discharged below 50% through winter may have reduced capacity.
- Water system: If you winterized with antifreeze, flush completely before use. Run water through every tap, shower, and toilet. Check under sinks and at the water heater for any joints that may have loosened.
- LP gas system: Check propane connections with soapy water. Inspect burner orifices on stove and furnace for insect nests, which are surprisingly common after storage.
- Slideout seals and mechanism: Lubricate slideout seals and mechanisms. Test each slide through full extension and retraction. Listen for unusual sounds.
Summer Preparation Checklist
- AC units: Clean filters and coils before heavy summer use. A clogged filter can reduce cooling capacity by 15-25%.
- Roof: Inspect for any sealant failures that could lead to water intrusion during summer rain.
- Awning: Inspect fabric, arms, and tension spring. Check that the auto-retract function works if equipped.
- Refrigerator ventilation: Clean exterior vents on propane/electric absorption fridges. Blocked vents cause overheating and failure in high ambient temperatures.
- UV protection: Inspect all exterior rubber seals and gaskets for UV degradation. Apply UV protectant to rubber and vinyl surfaces.
Fall Preparation Checklist
- Heating system: Test the furnace before you need it. Clean the furnace intake screen. Replace thermocouple if the furnace fails to light reliably.
- Winterization planning: If heading into cold climates, confirm you have the supplies and know the procedure for your specific water system layout.
- Exterior lighting: With shorter days, check all exterior lights are functioning.
- Weather seals on all doors and windows: Re-seal any gaps before cold weather arrives. Heat loss through poorly sealed doors and windows is significant.
Winter Preparation and Departure Checklist
- Winterize water system: Either drain completely or use RV antifreeze. Do not skip this step — burst pipes are expensive and can destroy interior cabinetry and flooring.
- Tire and suspension protection: If storing for an extended period, use tire covers to protect from UV. Consider moving the RV periodically to prevent flat-spotting.
- Battery maintenance: Either disconnect and bring batteries inside, or use a battery maintainer to prevent discharge below 50%.
- Rodent prevention: Seal potential entry points with steel wool. Place rodent deterrents inside and in exterior compartments.
